Motivational Enhancement Therapy

Motivational Enhancement Therapy (MET) is a methodical intervention approach for evoking change. It is designed to produce quick, internally-motivated change. It is abased on motivational psychology principles. It works towards mobilizing the patient’s own change resources. It can be used as a prelude to further treatment or as intervention treatment. This therapy is offered in both inpatient and outpatient treatment programs. The main objective of MET is to help individuals move from earlier stages into action using cognitive and emotional strategies. It is very much effective in situation in which contact with the patient is limited to only few sessions. It has been proved very effective in producing change in problem drinkers. This therapy is also used in treatment of drug abuse clients.

The basic approach used in MET is to motivate the client who is in the cycle of change and assists that person to move through the stage toward successful sustained change. This technique is mostly effective with less motivated client. The MET is based on 5 motivational principles:
- Express Empathy
- Develop Discrepancy
- Avoid Argumentation
- Roll with Resistance
- Support Self-Efficacy

The practical strategy adopted by MET is as follows: Building motivation for change, strengthening commitment to change, and follow-through strategies. This therapy is proved to be one of the most effective methods for alcohol addiction treatment. This is also suitable for drug addiction treatment as well.

The people who are addicted to drug and alcohols need some rehab center for treatment. The MET is used by many rehab centers. Any person addicted to drugs or alcohol can take admission in rehab center and can overcome addiction.
