Phencyclidine
Phencyclidine (PCP) is one of the most common drugs used by people for addiction purposes. There are many people in United States who are affected by the ill-effects of drug abuse. Many of them are in search of rehab centers so that they can overcome addiction.
PCP was developed in 1950s. It was used as an intravenous anesthetic. But in 1965 its use was banned for humans because it was found that it causes agitation, delusion, and irrational behavior. It is a dissociative drug exhibiting hallucinogenic and neurotoxic effects. PCP works primarily as an NMDA receptor antagonist, which blocks the activity of the NMDA Receptor. It is used in a recreational manner by drug users. It comes in liqiud and powder form. The method of absorption of of PCP is usually smoking (liquid PCP in which a cigarette or joint is dipped to be ingested through smoking). It is insufflated in powder form. PCP is white crystalline powder and it readily dissolves in water.
The effects of PCP are:
- Behavioral effects (varies with the amount of dose) – staggering, intoxication and numbness in the extremities, slurred speech, unstaedy gait, and bloodshot eyes, analgesia, anesthesia, and convulsions.
- Psychological effects – loss of ego boundaries, severe changes in body image, visual hallucinations, euphoria and depersonalization.
There is enormous number of drug rehab centers which offers variety of services in treatment of drug or alcohol addiction. PCP addict person needs immediate treatment for recovering from illness. The people should look for various factors before choosing any rehab center for addiction treatment.
