NIDA is a federal researching institute. It recognized in 1974. It is the largest follower of the world’s study on drug abuse and addiction. NIDA- funded scientific research addresses and define the most fundamental and essential questions about drug abuse, and try to understand that how drugs work in the brain and body by developing and testing new drug treatment and prevention approaches, and disseminating findings to the general public and special populations. NIDA has a mission to lead the nation in bringing the power of science to bear on drug abuse and addiction. It is the federal focal point for research on drug abuse and addiction.
The accomplishments of NIDA are as follows:-
- It contributes to secure decline in drug use among youth.
- It identifies the molecular sites and systems in the brain where every major drug of abuse has its affect.
- It discovers a new communication network that opens the way to new medical therapies.
- Demonstrates that craving is a treatable disease.
- Decreases the spread of HIV.
- Changes the course of drug abuse treatments in this country.
Drug addiction is very complex brain disease. It is characterized by drug craving. Seeking and use that can persist even in the face of extremely negative consequences. NIDA monitors what drugs are being abused by tracking trends in drug abuse through many different surveys and data collection systems.
NIDA Gives the proper treatment to people by giving the proper medications to drug addicted people and teach those ways to avoid drug and prevent relapse. The cost of drug abuse to society is $181 billion. It provides the materials on drugs of abuse for student and young adults.
